‘Tis the Season to Dress Festive

13th December 2013

I’m the one on Christmas wearing red and green, always. I don’t know why, but I get such an overwhelming desire to elf myself IRL when I know all the family is coming together and exchanging presents. Red and green in the same outfit isn’t a style I typically rock, so sometimes my outfits err on the costume-y side, but hey, it’s all in good fun. And besides, if you can’t go a little literal in your dressing at this time of year, when can you?

If you can’t get down with rocking the complementary red and green, I put together a few outfits that have just enough holiday spice to make you jingle down the hallway but not so much so that you find yourself falling down the chimney.

The cable knit, the plaid, the emerald green, the mahogany leather – oh my! Breathe it in; You’re now Douglas Fir, a new, yet instant classic Christmas character I just made up, and by far more style savvy than anyone in Rudolph’s crew.

Nothing says festive like a green velvet smoking jacket, amirite? Sure, you’ll be trading gifts with friends who’d love you even in your Christmas morning jammies, but that doesn’t mean you should schlep out. Go hard or go ho-ho-home.

Pants – J.Crew, $100
Shirt – H&M, $10
Jacket – Topman, $140
Belt – Cole Haan, $65
Shoes – eBay, $123

Little pops of red say “Let’s celebrate!” while dark jeans and comfy boots say “Pass the syrup.” You want to look like you tried, but also be able to go back for seconds.

Shirt – Banana Republic, $60
Socks – eBay, $12
Tie – eBay, $12
Jeans – Levi’s, $58
Shoes – eBay, $136
Belt – Fossil, $35

The red and green pockets squares are in high use this week and I am really starting to think a velvet blazer is on the cards….

The velvet suit is even better. I had one in high school I picked up thrift for like $12 and I wore it as often as I could. Then I burned it with a cigarette. Filthy habit.

      • gabi meyers

That. Sounds. Amazing. and so cozy!

Good call on the pocket squares! They can take an outfit from daily wear to festive in a pinch.

I’ve got a red gingham shirt and green knit tie that I like to wear around this time of year.
That green smoking jacket is ridiculous but I kind of want it anyway.

    • Style Girlfriend

Yeah, smoking jackets are meant to be ridiculous..but then coveted anyway :)

Only thing that is missing from that look is a pipe and a glass of brandy.

        • Style Girlfriend

Good call…we’ll just have to imagine those accessories included!

  • Joshua

Me? Festive = bow tie at holiday party.

    • Style Girlfriend

      That counts!

  • Justin

Red knit tie. Green vneck sweater. Santa socks. I think I’ve covered my bases today.

    • gabi meyers

      I have to agree!

    • Style Girlfriend

      Sounds like you’re looking sharp!

I’m not really big of the holidays, but I’d be glad to have any of them and just pretend it’s random red/green day. Well, except for the boots in the last one. I love my boots, but wearing those in northern Illnois this time of year is just asking to need new boots. I can literally hear cars making slushing sounds driving past my place as I type this.

    • Style Girlfriend

I was raised in Wisconsin, so am with you on the necessity of a waterproof boot!
