Outfit of the Week: Friday, March 1, 2013

1st March 2013
This Outfit of the Week is brought to you by… TJ!

Picture 20

“Spring decided to visit for a day this week so I dressed to match.”

Megan’s take:

TJ’s doing everything right here: his shirt fits close to his body, he’s rocking some bold pants (which by now I feel like you guys are doing on purpose because you know I love ‘em so much), those sunglasses are classically cool…but best of all? TJ looks like he feels great in what he’s wearing. And that smile? Well you know that’s the best accessory a girl wants to see you wearing.

Gabi’s take:

I love, love, LOVE the vintage jacket. It’s reminiscent of Members Only jackets, which I love. I also love the red pants because they are red, but a dusty red that feels right for the soft color palette of spring.

Here’s what TJ had to tell us about his outfit:

  • Sunglasses- knockoff clubmasters from Urban Outfitters
  • Shirt – Gap
  • Jacket- thrifted
  • Pants – J.Crew urban slim fit in smoke red
  • Shoes – penny loafers from Bruno Magli that I got on a trip to Venice

Well done TJ! Don’t forget guys: you can always enter a look you love for the SG #OOTW by emailing me at megan (at) stylegirlfriend.com, or tweeting me at @styleGF. If you haven’t yet noticed the trend, my completely subjective opinion is often swayed by non-selfie, full body pictures….and as we see with TJ, a grin always helps.

Tell me: How would you rock red pants like TJ’s?
  • average joe

great pants – i’ve got a pair from BR – same color

  • TJ

Sweet I won. Take that all my friends who make fun of my red pants!

    • average joe

i get grief for wearing mine too….just wait though, in 2 years, they’ll all fall in to line

    • Alexander

Heh, where I live (Southwestern Germany) darker/lighter red shades have had a huge influx in popularity. You’ll see a lot of people rocking something along the lines of bordeaux or dark crimson – I dig it.
Actually thinking of getting some dark red Chinos for Spring/Fall myself.

  • DanPatrickFlores

Also have a similar one I got from Target, then had tailored. I wear mine with a white OCBD and wingtips, no socks

edit: sometimes with a bow tie if I feel inclined, but usually with the top two buttons unbuttoned.

  • Canadian Pacific

The pants and shoes are good. The rest sucks. Shades look hella cheap. For the photo itself – homeboy should also use a camera with a higher resolution – or maybe he just needs to set his camera settings properly. Using some fill flash or maybe not standing in the shade would also have been good here. Hard to make out the details of the items.

    • TJ

Yes they are cheap. I said that they were knock off clubmasters. I don’t buy expensive sunglasses because I tend to lose them and would prefer to spend my money on other things.
I was taking a quick picture with a phone. It was easier to do it that way and then just email it on my phone rather than take a picture with my camera and have to get out my cord (which i’m not sure I have anymore) and transfer it to my computer.

      • Canadian Pacific

Well, the shades don’t fit your face very well. Get some aviators. That jacket is not getting you laid, maybe you don’t care, but you should. Can’t see the belt well enough to comment. What watch are you wearing?

        • DanPatrickFlores

I agree with the sunglasses, some squared-off aviators would frame your face better, but that’s an opinion. You gotta do what feels right to you.

I disagree on the jacket, that thrifted harrington jacket is a classic style, plus you probably got a really good deal on it.
          http://www.gilt.com/giltmanual/2011/03/the-harrington-jacket/

          • TJ

I did. I think I paid $3 for it. It’s not actually harrington brand but not bad for $3.

        • TJ

I do have some ao pilots actually. I just felt like wearing those ones instead. Obviously women do like the jacket, considering two women picked who won. I don’t base everything I wear on whether I will get laid. It was a Sunday, I was doing some errands around town.
The watch is a timex weekender. I supposed that its too cheap for you too?

          • Canadian Pacific

No, I think that is a good looking watch. It is not about certain brands or how much something costs, it is whether or not it looks cheap. Don’t be fooled by these ladies. If you were wearing the right jacket, they would call it HOT. And its not that the jacket is bad, its just that its not doing much for you.

          • Alexander

If you try to give someone else advice I’d suggest you try being more constructive and less derogatory and presumptuous. To be more explicit:
“The rest sucks” could be “I don’t like the rest because of [insert reason]“.
“That jacket is not getting you laid, maybe you don’t care, but you should”
“Don’t be fooled by these ladies. If you were wearing the right jacket,
they would call it HOT. And its not that the jacket is bad, its just
that its not doing much for you.”
            A) The premise of those sentences is presumptuous. Don’t give tips regarding private matters if not asked. Plus, you can’t possibly make a general statement on the preferences of all (Western) women.
            B) You do realize that you’re accusing them of lying or implying you know their tastes better than themselves?
            C) Are you higher service judge/law professional or a family member of his? If not I don’t think you’re in a position to tell him what he SHOULD be doing.

No personal offense to you but where I come from people call this kind of attitude “pretentious” or “infantile”. If you’re not a teen I seriously hope you don’t talk like this with your family & friends.

          • Canadian Pacific

            A) The premise of those sentences is presumptuous. Don’t give tips regarding private matters if not asked.

(the dude entered an online contest, what private matter?)

Plus, you can’t possibly make a general statement on the preferences of all (Western) women.

(true, but i think its fair to make some generalizations)

            B) You do realize that you’re accusing them of lying or implying you know their tastes better than themselves?

(look, they are being nice – plus, the whole vibe of this site is to applaud guys that aren’t totally clueless when it comes to style. The ladies are cheerleaders for us guys – and that fine, but we should realize that they are not going to be brutally honest)

            C) Are you higher service judge/law professional or a family member of his? If not I don’t think you’re in a position to tell him what he SHOULD be doing.

(I am the only person in this post that is trying to help the guy out! I made suggestions. I was direct and over the top to get my point across and maybe create some discussion, which it has. I thought his chinos and shoes were great! The red pants are a risk! Good job!)

No personal offense to you but where I come from people call this kind of attitude “pretentious” or “infantile”. If you’re not a teen I seriously hope you don’t talk like this with your family & friends.

I get it, but my family and friends actually love my brutal honesty and get that I am a nice guy who is very sarcastic.

Bottom line, maybe I am not the target audience for this blog. I make mistakes with my own style, but generally I know (i) how to dress well; (ii) what looks good on me and (iii) what most women want to see. It seems that this site is more targeted at dudes that need some serious help and SG wants to encourage them. This seems odd to me because I know the guys that are clueless when it comes to style and they have zero interest in reading a style blog. Perhaps they find the site when they do run a good search about picking out a tie or what color shoes should go with X color pants.

I think SG is a great writer and I like the aesthetics of this blog, but personally I think the posts are a bit condescending/patronizing, but maybe thats just my opinion because I am trying to take my shit to the next level and just roll my eyes when I see Aldo shoes in posts when I think most shoes should be investment pieces and I want better quality.

I also think it is interesting that SG’s own style seems to me to be sexy and fashion forward and yet this site gets all excited when us guys wear something that isn’t dad jeans, white athletic shoes and an ill-fitting t-shirt with some logo.

Why can’t we wear the hot and fashion forward stuff? We can and we should. That is where I am coming from.

Ditto on the sunglasses. I always think round frames make people look like Milo from the Disney movie Atlantis.

      • That Guy

Haters will hate, TJ. Personally, I love the look, especially the red pants. I have a pair myself, that I don’t wear that often. This is inspiration to start rocking them again.

      • http://www.stylegirlfriend.com Style Girlfriend

I thought you looked great TJ. Obviously :)

      • Ryan

What?!? You mean you couldn’t go to a professional photographic studio and have the shots taken by an experienced pro fashion photographer? WTF were you thinking man!!
As for the cheap sunnies, I use to wear them too, but one day I decided to invest in a good pair and found because I forked out $$$ I took much better care of them and they lasted a long time. My eyes are thankful, as well as my head because they fit properly. Cheap sunglasses dig into the side of my head and hurt after a while.

All the love for red pants reminds me of the NPR story I listened to this morning about the Pope’s red shoes. Apparently the Mexican cobbler who makes them is getting a huge surge in interest with all of the recent news out of the Vatican. As a supply chain guy who also reads SG, what could I possibly enjoy more than a story about manufacturing capacity and fashion combined!

I wonder if we’ll see a surge in red footwear next season.

“As a supply chain guy who also reads SG…” dead. love it.

Also, any time I can remind a reader of an NPR story, an east coast liberal agnostic angel gets its wings.

I love harringtons, classic 60′s Mod jacket.

    • TJ

The brand is actually field and stream. Like the magazine I guess? It was $3 at the thrift store, not a bad knock off for that price.

      • http://www.stylegirlfriend.com Style Girlfriend

        Totally dig it
