Shop Abroad: Favorite Places to Visit Across the Pond

Hey guys, Gabi here! I’m so happy to be back on Style Girlfriend, but also back in the States! I did have a lot of fun learn a lot during my time in London studying the Vogue Fashion Diploma at the Condé Nast College over the last few months, and I even found time to explore the shopping scene. I found a few places I thought you guys might like to check out. Some of them have online stores, but some you’ll have to (like, seriously must) visit in person.

Here are my favorite shops abroad (and a few other places worth a look):

The Kooples

It’s every girl’s dream to have a boyfriend with a wardrobe perfectly coordinated to their own. Okay, maybe not, but The Kooples have made that option a very feasible possibility, and for that I love them.

Other must-stop shops: Stumper & FieldingMatches FashionTopman (at Oxford Circus)Selfridges & Co., Liberty, Cordings

I knew I liked this concept store before I even stepped inside. The top floor was a cafe, and downstairs you could shop for anything from clothing to furniture. A few of my favorite #menswear brands in the store were Deux Ex MachinaSix & Sons, and Mads Nørgaard.

Other must-stop shops: O’QuireyScotch & Soda, BlueBlood

Jenners was the oldest department store in Scotland until House of Fraser took over. You can get afternoon tea within the store, which is always a plus for me, because I am VERY FANCY. Plus, it has a great view of the city.

Other must-stop shops: CrombieMoss

Slam Jam

This store is not afraid of color and pattern, so naturally I was all about it. All the cool brands you already loved plus few new ones, all in one place.

Other must-stop shops: La Ferramenta

Trinity Sweaters

Your sweater game is lacking if you don’t have a classic Aran sweater in rotation. My personal favorites are the Aran Mans Cowlneck and the Irish Aran Sweater, but you really can’t go wrong. And, if you can’t hop on an Aer Lingus before next christmas, they deliver to the US!

Other must-stop shops: Brown Thomas

Unfortunately I didn’t get to tour all of Europe, and I’m sure I missed a few hidden gems even in the places I did visit. Hey, that’s what the next visit is for, right?

So tell me:

What are your favorite shops to visit when you travel abroad?

Valentine’s Day Gift Guide: What to Get the New Lady in Your Life

Valentine’s Day is on FRIDAY, guys!

Screen Shot 2014-02-11 at 1.01.53 AM

So you’ve been “seeing” “this girl” for not too long – maybe a few months, maybe less…maybe more – a-a-nd, whaddaya know? Here comes Valentine’s Day. Maybe she’s not your girlfriend (yet), but this holiday is kindofabigdeal in girl world, right up there with the Halloween in the Mean Girls universe. Don’t show up uninformed (and empty-handed) like LiLo.

Even if she says “oh, I don’t do Valentine’s Day, don’t get me anything,” you probably still should. And by “probably” I mean “definitely.” You’ll surprise her, and she’ll say “Aw, you shouldn’t have,” and then “Oops, I Did It Again” will start playing (yes, even if there are no speakers anywhere to be found), and you will have fulfilled her ‘become Britney Spears’ fantasy and she will brag about how great you are to her friends and office co-workers for the rest of the month.

Here are some V-Day gift ideas for that new gal that you’re spending an increasing amount of time with:

1. Monogram Clutch, $32

As a girl, you can’t have too many small bags that can hold all of your many, many small things. You also can’t have too many things that remind other people that they are your things. My favorite bag is a clutch made of these wrappers that say my name, and I’ve had it since the 8th grade and I still get complimented on it.

2. Gem Cutout Mirror, $25

Something about how you want her to experience the beauty you see every time you look at her…but better worded. Plus, these ones are shaped like jewels, so she will sense shades of the “standard” Valentine’s Day, but way cooler. Just make sure it doesn’t break.

3. Cat Mug Set, $30

Tell her she can be a crazy cat lady without being alone and she will NEVER FORGET YOU.

4. Sushi Making Kit, $38

Perfect for any girl who loves learning new things/D.I.Y. projects/sushi. It would also be a great present if you’ve heard her complain about how restaurant food is the absolute worse on Valentine’s Day so you could propose you make it for dinner together. No one-choice prix-fixe, no long waits for cold food, and no pressure from other restaurant patrons getting down on one knee. Personalized and intimate.

5. Tower of Treats, $40

Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE chocolates, but a Harry and David box trumps all food gifts. I had a brief flirtation with Edible Arrangements, but I came back around. This tower comes with the ultimate guilty pleasure (Moose Munch) and the taste-converting Royal Riviera Pears. Even people who think they don’t like pears love. these. pears.

6. Flowers. $50

Flowers are a classic. Roses are too romantic for an early relationship, so go for lilies or peonies. If you’re feeling ambitious, you could arrange one yourself, like I did for my mom (super romantic, I know). It’s surprisingly relaxing, and you can make it personal by including her favorite flower (sleuth it up on her Pinterest page for inspiration).

7. Nutella Cookbook, $11

If you know what she likes, get her a big, pretty book about it. This Nutella Cookbook, for instance, would be of great interest to many ladies I know.

8. Earbuds, $39

The pretty pink color feels Valentine’s-appropriate, but the earbuds can be worn year round.

9. Softest Throw – Ombre, $35-$49

Perfect for cuddling on movie nights. Upgrade it with a tub of movie theatre popcorn, Buncha Crunch, and a movie or two that both of you would like to watch (ie, don’t feel obligated to include rom-coms).

Ever been through a “not quite in a relationship yet” Valentine’s Day? What’d you get her?

Wear it Well: The Puffer Vest

You guys know that here at SG HQ, we love a good puffer vest. We share twitpics of our own puffers, and we’ve oohed and ahhed over celebs’ stylish interpretations of the sporty look.

As the thermometer inches downwards, then, we thought it was the perfect time to add the extra layer of warmth that comes from the puffer vest.

Below, three outfits – complete with puffer vest, naturally – to keep you guys feelin’ cozy and lookin’ cool.

The puffer vest can sub in for a big bulky coat if you just have to run from your car into the mall. Its streamlined silhouette will make for greater range of motion when grabbing that last sweater on the very top shelf, not to mention breezy comfort when you have to stand in a 40 minute line to actually purchase said-sweater.

Puffer Vest – eBay, $50
Shirt – H&M, $30
Pants – eBay, $162
Shoes – Ugg, $140
Belt – eBay, $27

RobPat Revisited

ICYMI, we obsessed over RobPat’s sportcoat+puffer vest combo last year, and let me just affirm that, yes, we are still very much interested in this layered cold weather style. A puffer feels totally unexpected with dress clothes, but also so right. Make sure to find a thin one so that it fits under the blazer without making you look puffy.

Puffer Vest – eBay, $150
Shirt – Banana Republic, $60
Blazer – Topman, $300
Pants – Toddland, $58
Belt – Fossil, $35
Shoes – DSW, $110

Brawny Man Date Night

Screen Shot 2013-12-02 at 9.18.21 AM

This is what my imaginary lumberjack boyfriend would wear on a date night at the movies. The sweater is dressier than his typical wood-cutting (that’s what they do, right?) uniform, but his mountain man mystique is maintained with a big orange puffer vest that will keep him warm when I steal all the popcorn.

Vest – eBay, $119
Sweater – Billabong, $52
Pants – Fox, $55
Shoes – eBay, $124
Belt – Karmaloop, $51

As you can see, a men’s puffer vest is more than just, well, a puffy vest; it’s a way of life. The chameleon of your wardrobe, they can be fancy or free of care. The best puffer looks are those that look more intentional than just, “Oh I’m cold in what I’m wearing so I should put this on, right?” Try layering your puffer with a dressed-up look; we think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

‘Tis the Season to Dress Festive

I’m the one on Christmas wearing red and green, always. I don’t know why, but I get such an overwhelming desire to elf myself IRL when I know all the family is coming together and exchanging presents. Red and green in the same outfit isn’t a style I typically rock, so sometimes my outfits err on the costume-y side, but hey, it’s all in good fun. And besides, if you can’t go a little literal in your dressing at this time of year, when can you?

If you can’t get down with rocking the complementary red and green, I put together a few outfits that have just enough holiday spice to make you jingle down the hallway but not so much so that you find yourself falling down the chimney.

The cable knit, the plaid, the emerald green, the mahogany leather – oh my! Breathe it in; You’re now Douglas Fir, a new, yet instant classic Christmas character I just made up, and by far more style savvy than anyone in Rudolph’s crew.

Sweater – eBay, $169
Pants – Billabong, $65
Blazer – eBay, $30
Belt – Karmaloop, $51
Boots – eBay, $131

Nothing says festive like a green velvet smoking jacket, amirite? Sure, you’ll be trading gifts with friends who’d love you even in your Christmas morning jammies, but that doesn’t mean you should schlep out. Go hard or go ho-ho-home.

Pants – J.Crew, $100
Shirt – H&M, $10
Jacket – Topman, $140
Belt – Cole Haan, $65
Shoes – eBay, $123
Family Brunch

Little pops of red say “Let’s celebrate!” while dark jeans and comfy boots say “Pass the syrup.” You want to look like you tried, but also be able to go back for seconds.

Shirt – Banana Republic, $60
Socks – eBay, $12
Tie – eBay, $12
Jeans – Levi’s, $58
Shoes – eBay, $136
